They battled out for the 3 men and 3 women singles places available for the Beijing Olympic Games. Day 1 : Groups (5th April) The top seeded players advanced through the opening day of play. William Henzell and his Australian team mates, Kyle Davis, David Zalcberg, and Robert Frank, won all their matches and finished in first place in their respective groups. Miao Miao, Stephanie Sang, and Jian Fang Lay also finished on top of their respective groups. May Cho came third in her group, after losing to top seed Karen Li (New Zealand) and to Anolyn Lulu (Vanuatu). Day 2 : Stage 1 Draw (6th April) William Henzell secured the first qualifying spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games with a strong and determined display of table tennis, overpowering fellow Australian David Zalcberg in the Stage 1 Final by 4-0 sets. However, it was not an easy day for William. He encountered a tight seven sets match against Robert Frank in the semi-final and endured very humid conditions at the stadium. At the interview with Steve Dainton (Director of the ITTF Asia & Pacific Office in Beijing), William Henzell said: "I am so happy to have finally made it through. This has been at the top of my planning for the last few years since Athens and to finally qualify and know I am now going to the Olympics again is satisfying because I can finally say the work has paid off. Also my parents have already booked flights, bought tickets and paid for accommodation, so I did not want to have to explain to them if I did not make it through! It was tough out there due to the climate in New Caledonia, which was probably a disadvantage for me. It’s also a disadvantage coming in as the clear hot favourite because the other players have nothing to lose in their match. Young Robbie Frank played a fantastic match tactically against me in the semis and I had to use my experience of being in the same situation in the past few years to overcome that. I will go back now to Frickenhausen to hopefully help the club win the Second Division in the German League. After that I will go back to Australia to probably start a fresh life in my native country. I must make special mention of a guy who has been perhaps the biggest influence on my career in recent years and that is my current coach at Frickenhausen, Qiu Jianxin. He has been tremendous." Karen Li (New Zealand) won the Women's Final beating Miao Miao in four sets and booked the first female spot in the Beijing Olympics. Day 3 : Stage 2 Draw (7th April) Kyle Davis qualified for Beijing Olympics when he edged out David Zalcberg in a tense and fluctuating seven sets match in the final. Earlier, Kyle overcame his comrade Robert Frank 4-1 in the semi-final, while David prevailed over Nathan Lowe (NZ) 4-1 in the other semi. The women's Stage 2 final was even more nerve racking, with Jian Fang Lay taking the second qualifying position by 11 shots to 9 in the last set, over Stephanie Sang. Jian Fang Lay was down 4-7 in the final set when she took a time out, changed tactics and won the next four points to get back into the match. The semi-finals were an all Australian affair, with Stephanie Sang beating Miao Miao 4-1, and Jian Fang Lay defeating May Cho 4-0. Day 4 : Stage 3 Draw (8th April) Two more Australians qualified to play in the Beijing Olympics - David Zalcberg and Stephanie Sang. The men's final went the full distance, with David Zalcberg just managing to hold off Robert Frank in the last set. The women's final match between Stephanie Sang and Miao Miao was also a seven-sets triller, with Stephanie winning in the second deuce. May Cho's chances of qualifying were squashed by Miao Miao in the semi-final. Click here for: Men's Results and Women's Results.
