S. A. was down 3-5 with the last three singles to be played.  New Zealand's top player, Tanya Sulimova had gone through the earlier rounds undefeated, but fell to Julie Coombes earlier, with Cynthia Langley to play her in the last round.  Cynthia was down 0-2 but got up to win in 5 games.  Julie Coombes started off in a similar fashion and was behind 0-2.  Julie fought back, took the next two games and narrowly won in deuce in the fifth. It was up to the last match to decide the team championships.  Dawn Darwent played very steady and won the decider in four games.  What a marvellous match and come-back!

Our other State teams also played well.  Over 50 Women's team with Alice Abbas, Lorraine Baker, and Chris Matthews was runner-up, while the Over 70 Women's Team, represented by Betty Bird, Jan Greabner, and Jill Wherry also collected silver medal.  S. A. Over 40 Men's team came 6th (12 teams), Over 50 Men's Team was 5th (15 teams), and Over 60 Men's team was 6th (12 teams).

In the singles events, Cynthia Langley won the Over 60 Women's Singles, Julie Coombes took the Over 65 Women's Singles gold medal, Betty Bird captured the Over 75 Women's Singles crown, while Jan Graebner secured the Over 80 Women's Singles title.  Alice Abbas obtained a bronze medal in the Over 50 Women's Singles.

South Australian players were also successful in winning medals in the doubles events.  Gold medals went to Cuong Du in the Over 65 Men's Doubles, to Julie Coombes in the Over 60 Mixed Doubles, and to Betty Bird in both Over 70 and Over 75 Mixed Doubles and O75 Women's Doubles.

At the conclusion of the championships, Cynthia Langley won the Over 60 Women Best Player award, while the Over 70 Women Best Player was awarded to Betty Bird.
