Australian Veterans Championships 2007

The Australian Veterans Table Tennis Championships were held at the Tallebudgera Leisure Centre on the Gold Coast from 15th to 22nd September 2007. The championships attracted a record number of 375 players and 101 teams, with many top-rated overseas veterans from Denmark, Egypt, England, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Sweden participating in the tournament. |

The State teams that represented South Australia were:
In the teams competition, South Australian Over 50 Women’s team consisting of Alice Abbas, Lorraine Baker, and Kay Crowell beat the New Zealand team in the semi-finals. They had a close match against Victoria in the finals and had to settle for the runners-up spot. Our Over 60 Women’s team, made up of Julie Coombes, Dawn Darwent, and Cynthia Langley, and our Over 70 Women’s team, with Betty Bird, Jan Graebner, and Alice Waye came third. It was a brilliant tournament for our ladies. Cynthia Langley won gold medals in 5 events - in the Over 65 Women’s Singles, Over 60 Women’s Doubles, Over 60 Mixed Doubles, Over 65 Women Doubles, and Over 65 Mixed Doubles. Betty Bird retained her Over 70 Women’s Singles championship title and collected two more gold medals in the Over 70 Women's Doubles and the Over 70 Mixed Doubles. At the conclusion of the championships, Cynthia Langley was awarded the Best Player for Over 60 Women, while Betty Bird won the Best Player Award for Over 70 Women. World University Summer Games 2007

Over 9,600 athletes from 152 countries assembled at the Athletes Village at Thammasat University in Bangkok for the 24th World University Summer Games. They participated in 10 days of competition from 8th to 18th August 2007 in 17 different sports. Australia had a contingent of 280 athletes. The Games were held in an Olympic atmosphere and were very well organized, with excellent meals and accommodation, transport, and tours provided to the university students. Roy Abbas, Scott Houston, and Ann Marie Jolley represented Australia at the World University Summer Games. The Australian table tennis team consists of: Men: Roy Abbas (SA), Scott Houston (SA), George Tang (NSW). Women: Ann Marie Jolley (SA), Claire Campbell-Innes (Qld), Michelle Beaumont (NSW). The Men's Team competition had 31 countries, split up into 8 groups. Australia advanced into the last 16 where they lost to a strong German team. The Women's team was less fortunate, had two close matches, but was unable to proceed to the next stage. In the individual events, most of the Australian players lost in the first or second round as the competition was top-class with many professional players from Asian or European countries. Scott Houston succeeded in getting through to the last 32 in the Men's Singles, losing to K.S. Lai (Chinese Taipei). China dominated the table tennis competition by winning most of the gold medals, with the Men's Doubles going to Chinese Taipei. |

Australian Closed Championships 2007

The Australian Closed Championships were held in Wynnum, Queensland from 26th to 29th July 2007. William Henzell won the Australian Closed Singles title for the fifth time when he defeated Kyle Davis in the final. William also succeeded in capturing gold medals in the Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. |

Scott Houston did very well winning two silver medals by advancing into the finals of the Men's Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. May Cho and Kerry Bungey combined to take silver medals in Women's Doubles, while May also secure a bronze medal in the Mixed Doubles. The Women's Singles was won by Stephanie Sang (Vic). |

European Veterans Championships 2007

Betty Bird won a silver medal and a bronze medal at the 7th European Veterans Table Tennis Championships held in Rotterdam from 25th to 30th June 2007. Betty partnered with Nicole Pillere (France) in the Over 70 Women's Doubles. They advanced to the final and were unlucky to be defeated in a very close match. In the Over 70 Women's Singles, Betty lost to the eventual winner M. Blasberg (Germany) in the semi-finals. |

Eight players represented the State at Australian Open Table Tennis Championships, held in Melbourne from 24th to 30th June 2007:
After winning all of their matches in the early rounds, South Australian Men's Team faced arch rival Victoria in the final round. They fought hard, with William Henzell winning both his matches, to go down 2-5 to take the silver medal. |

Our Women's Team started off well and won their first four matches. They stumbled in their last 3 important rounds against Queensland (runner-up, New South Wales (third), and Victoria (winner), and finished 4th place. William Henzell had a very successful tournament and remained undefeated in the team as well as the individual events. William won the Men's Singles title when he beat Simon Gerada in the finals. He also collected gold medals in the Men's Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. It was the first time that Over 30 events were held at the Australian Open. Sharad Pandit won the inaugural Over 30 Men's Singles and the Over 30 Men's Doubles titles. May Cho obtained a bronze medal in the Women's Singles. Scott Houston, Alex Swanson, Kerry Bungey, Sharad Pandit, and May Cho also won medals in the doubles events. |

Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2007

William Henzell and May Cho represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games Table Tennis Championships, held in Jaipur, India from 30th May to 5th June 2007. Paul Langley was the team manager and coach for the Men's team. The Australian teams consists of:
The Australian Men's team won bronze medal when they finished 2nd in their stage 2 group round-robin, beating . Our Women's team finished 5th, beating Canada 3-2 in the play-off match. William Henzell got through to the quarter-finals of Men's Singles but succumbed to an in-form K. Nasiru (Nigeria). May Cho was injured and unable to compete. Miao Miao won a bronze medal in the Women's singles when she lost in a very close 7 sets match against the eventual winner Sun Bei Bei (Singapore) in the semi-finals. The Men's Singles was won by Gao Ning (Singapore). |
World Table Tennis Championships 2007

William Henzell (SA), Miao Miao (Vic) and Stephanie Sang (Vic) represented Australia at the World Table Tennis Championships held in Zagreb from 21st to 27th May 2007. William Henzell lost 0-4 to Cheng Yuk (Hong Kong) in the first round of the Men's singles. He teamed up with Miao Miao in the Mixed Doubles and beat an Indian pair in the first round. Unfortunately, they faced Ma Lin and Wang Nan (China) in the next round and lost 0-4. Miao Miao advanced to the second round of the Women's Singles and narrowly went down to Elizabeta Samara (Romania) in the 7th game. Stephanie Sang was defeated by Riu Zhang (Hong Kong) in the first round. In the Women's Doubles, Miao Miao and Stephanie did not succeed in getting through the first round. The 2007 World Table Tennis Championships were again dominated by China. Wang Liqin retained his Men's Singles crown after recovering from 1-3 game and 1-7 point deficit in the 5th game. Guo Yue won the Women's Singles while the three doubles were also won by Chinese players. |

The 1st International Veterans Table Tennis Team Championships were held in Cottbus, Germany on 18th to 20th May 2007, with 54 teams from 11 countries participating in the championships. |

In their earlier rounds, South Australian veterans Alice Abbas and Lorraine Baker faced strong oppositions and played steadily to win all their matches, defeating teams from Germany, Bulgaria and England. In their final match against the Czech Republic, they displayed strong determination and team effort to overcome their highly rated opponents in a trilling match that was won in the very last game of the deciding fifth rubber. Congratulations to Alice and Lorraine for their excellent performance in winning the International Veterans Over 50 Women's Team gold medal! The competition in the Men's section was even tougher. Both the Australian Men's teams managed to win several of their matches. |

New Zealand Veterans Championships 2007

Sharad Pandit and Alice Abbas represented Australia in the Trans-Tasman Trophy Test match against New Zealand on 5 April 2007. This annual Test match was held at the commencement of the New Zealand Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Auckland from 5 to 9 April 2007. The sixteen players Australian Veterans team won the Test by winning 31 matches to 9. |

In the Veterans Championships, Sharad Pandit was triumphant in the Over 40 Men's Doubles event. Alice Abbas combined with Lorraine Baker and together they won the Over 50 Women's Team event, as well as the Over 50 Women's Doubles. Lorraine also obtained a gold medal in the Over 50 Mixed Doubles. Our three S. A. players collected medals in other events and featured in the Order of Merit List for the championships, with Alice as No.1 and Lorraine as No.3 in the Women's Over 50, while Sharad is No. 4 in the Men's Over 40. Congratulations to Alice, Lorraine, and Sharad!

Australian Youth Championships 2007

The Australian Youth Table Tennis Championships were held in Lismore, NSW from 8 to 14 April 2008. This year, South Australia is represented by one team - the Men's team consisting of Marc Tunbridge, Jonathon Schubert, Viet Bui, and Alexander Edmund. They won 2 of their matches and came sixth out of eight teams. In the men's singles event, Jonathon Schubert played well and won his round-robin group but was eliminated in the first round. He partnered with Marc Tunbridge in the men's doubles and they managed to reach the quarter-finals. Viet Bui participated in the Cadet Challenge that was held at the start of the Championships. Against the top national Under 15 boys, Viet fought hard and came 5th by winning 3 and losing 4 matches. |
