The Australian Junior Table Tennis Championships were held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Melbourne on 1st to 7th October 2006. The majority of our State juniors are from the under 14 age group, most of them at the national championships for the first time.
Our under 16 boys' team played magnificently and won silver medals by winning seven matches and losing just one match. Our under 14 girls' team, surprised everyone. They were seeded 5th, but overcame stronger opponents to win bronze medals, losing 4-5 in a critical match to second-place Queensland. Victoria took a clean sweep of all the teams titles and retained their dominance in the individual events as well. Congratulations to the following medal winners:

With players from Singapore, Philippines, and New Zealand participating in the Championships, the standard of competition was very high. The S.A. women's team played very well and came 4th behind two world-class Singapore teams (winner and runner-up) and Victoria (third). Our men's team finished 4th as well. They fought hard and were very unlucky to lose a crucial match against Victoria, when S.A. was 4-2 rubbers up. In the 7th rubber between William Henzell and Simon Gerada, with the score at 2 all, 9-8 points up, victory slipped away when we went down 10-12 in the deciding game. S.A. lost the last 2 rubbers. Singapore won the Men's Team competition, with Victoria second, and New South Wales third. In the individuals competition, William Henzell won a bronze medal in the Men's Singles, losing to the eventual winner Zhong Ze Liu of Singapore in the semi-finals. Scott Houston and Alex Swanson both reached the quarter-finals of the Men's Singles. South Australian women also excelled, with May Cho, Kerry Bungey, and Ann Marie Jolley winning bronze medals in the Women's Doubles event. May Cho advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women's Singles. At the conclusion of the championships, May was awarded the Victor Barna Trophy for the best and fairest player. Congratulations to the following medal winners:
